Date: January 20, 2026 Venue: Aspmyra Stadion, Bodø Result:
Bodø/Glimt 3 – 1 Manchester City
If Arsenal’s victory was a statement of intent, Manchester
City’s defeat in the Arctic Circle was a cry for help. Pep Guardiola’s side,
already reeling from a derby defeat, were dismantled by the Norwegian champions
in freezing conditions on an artificial surface.
The Collapse
City’s defensive fragility was exposed within the opening 25
minutes. Bodø/Glimt, playing with fearlessness and exploiting the space behind
City’s high line, scored twice in two minutes. Kasper Høgh was the tormentor-in-chief,
heading home a cross from Ole Didrik Blomberg in the 22nd minute before
finishing a sweeping counter-attack in the 24th minute to make it 2-0.
The systemic issues in City’s midfield were glaring. Without
the injured Jeremy Doku and Savinho to provide width, City’s attacks were
narrow and predictable. Erling Haaland, returning to Norway, endured a
frustrating night, missing a clear chance before halftime and finding himself
isolated against a resolute Bodø defence.
The second half brought further misery. Jens Petter Hauge,
revitalized at his boyhood club, curled a stunning effort past Gianluigi
Donnarumma to extend the lead to 3-0. Although Rayan Cherki scored a
consolation goal, the match ended in chaos for City as Rodri was sent off for
two yellow cards in the span of a minute.
Statistical Reality
Despite holding 66% possession and completing 640 passes to
Bodø’s 306, City created a lower expected goals (xG) value (1.16) than their
opponents (1.35). This defeat leaves City on 13 points, placing their automatic
qualification hopes in jeopardy and compounding a miserable start to 2026 where
they have yet to win a league game.
